Our Core Values
CELEBRATE
Why celebrate? History has taught us that even in the most challenging and adverse situations, there is always something worth celebrating. We celebrate the creativity, resilience, brilliance, tenacity, and success within the African-American culture. In spite of lagging test scores and other academic discrepancies as a group, there are hundreds of thousands of African-American children who are excelling in school and achieving excellence. Our celebration of those children has been lacking in the national conversation. We provide a platform to celebrate African-American children and reading.
ENCOURAGE
Celebration is an opportunity to give hope, inspiration and encouragement. Encouragement can originate from various sources, and we will present opportunities to inspire young African-American children by introducing them to stories, people, places, and things.
PROMOTE
Why promote? There is a need to market literacy to African-American children. It is important that children have a wide variety of books that pique their interest and also touch them personally to motivate reading. We highlight books that reflect the diversity of African-American experiences told from various points of views, perspectives, settings, genres, economic backgrounds to the mainstream.
